Boracay Travel Diary Pt 1

Boracay, home of the beautiful beautiful beaches. Getting there was one heck of a journey though,  with 2 flights + a ferry ride just to get onto the island. I heard there are direct flights from Sin to Kalibo now (we made the trip in March) which is great news!

Our very tiny plane bringing us to the island of Kalibo. Cebu Pacific is probably the only airline that features interactive games with the passengers, too cute.

Lovely clear blue skies at the airport.

Ride to our accommodation. Boracay is a pretty tiny island (you can probably cover the entire island on foot in about half a day) so these tricycles are the easiest way to get around. One tri fits 3-5 (depending on how you squeeze and hang on to each other) and cost about 10-50 pesos/pax (depending on your bargaining skills).

View from our apartment, never seen such gorgeous waters, the view was spectacular

Love our deck

Our beachfront apartment (mangoriders) which fit the 7 of us quite cosily and for a pretty low price (thank you airbnb). We were located on Bulabog beach, very well known beach for kite surfing. As can be expected, the sea breeze was fantastic. Bulabog is about a 10 min walk from the more tourist-friendly white beach. So its actually a great place to stay if you prefer to live away from the hustle of bustle of the crowd.

Fruit shakes - we drank about 4 of these everyday.
Philippines is known for mangoes, so the mango shakes here are one of the sweetest and richest you will ever taste.

Pork Adobo

Lovely clear water although for some reason, parts of the sea were infested with algae. Nonetheless, the white sand, infinite blue sky coupled with the clearest water made for one of the most beautiful sights.

White beach - it is pretty touristy. A long stretch of restaurants, cafes, bars, diving shops and massage parlors.

You cant leave White beach without trying the famous Jonah's fruitshake. This place must have about 40 different flavors.

Nylon Coffee Roasters

Hipster central, attracting boys and girls in various forms of vintage clothing and large nerd specs. Whether its clientele appeals to you, Nylon Coffee serves some damm good coffee.
My criteria for good coffee is pretty simple, as long as it taste good without sugar I am happy.

Happily indulging in some Sarah loft's goodies ( bake sale!), the carrot cake and elderflower cake were so good. I need to get my ass down to her cafe.

Btw, there is basically one seat in the coffee place so its really just a take-away joint

Restaurant Week: Bistro Du Vin

I have already raved about my restaurant week experience at Bistro Du Vin here so I wont go into too much detail; just that the food was just as good and service just as excellent.

Huge portions of foie gras and the most tender melt in your mouth beef cheeks. Bistro Du Vin still remains the only place I will come back in all my restaurant week experiences.

Walnet Tart with vanilla ice cream - very nice dessert but a tad too much after the 2 heavy dishes

Looking forward to my next visit :)

Restaurant Week: Absinthe

I think I just started a new tradition for Restaurant Week - Pick one I never tried before and then pick Bistro Du Vin.  The most recent one, my "new" pick was Absinthe - I am always walking past the quaint little shophouse so this was the chance to try it.

Prawn and avocado salad with sweet chilli and lime dressing. I am a big believer in putting avocado on everything so this dish went down smoothly with me.

duck and pistacho terrine - salty and erm spam-like.

Sea bream, potatoes and a parsley emulsion - The fish was nothing fantastic, decently cooked. I can never understand the appeal of foam on your food. It is not aesthetically pleasing and my tastebuds are not discerning enough to actually identify what its supposed to be.

Best dish of the meal - Lemon Meringue tart. I love lemony deserts and this was wonderfully tart (yes I went there) with a buttery flaky crust.

Overall, service and food were decent but not impressive. Portions were tiny, probably due to Restaurant week prices (which defeats the whole purpose of course)
